In der indischen Mythologie bedeutet das Wort Frühling. Vasant (Geschlecht männlich) ist der Gott des Frühlings, im indischen Verständnis bis heute die fruchtbare Zeit und Periode der Freude. Mit dem Raga Basant verbindet der indische Musiker die Vorstellung, durch sein Spiel die Blumen zum Blühen zu bringen.
